KUCHING, Nov 10: Sarawak’s prospects in the hydrogen industry look promising with the recent discovery that only 15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electric current is required to produce 1kg of hydrogen, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Previously, it was understood that approximately 60 kWh of power was needed to produce the same amount of hydrogen.

However, a joint research effort by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and the Sarawak government uncovered a new membrane technology that significantly reduces the energy requirement to 38 kWh.

“Last week, I read in a journal that they are only using 15kwh to produce 1kg of hydrogen. If that is the case, the production of hydrogen will be cheaper.

“There’s a possibility that the scientists may produce compact electrolyser that can be cheaper so your production of hydrogen will be cheaper,” he said during Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) annual dinner broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) on Facebook earlier tonight.

Among those present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Federal Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, IEM president Prof Dr Siti Norlida Buniyamin and IEM Sarawak branch chairperson Sim Hui Kheng. — DayakDaily
