S’wak, Petronas working on new membrane technology requiring only half of power needed to produce hydrogen

KUCHING, Oct 1: Sarawak is keen to work with Petronas on discovering a new membrane technology that only requires 38 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or nearly half of the electric current to produce hydrogen.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg explained that hydrogen is normally produced using 60kWh of power, but Petronas has invented a membrane that can split hydrogen and oxygen with only 38kWh of power.

“Just imagine, it would save half of the cost. Maybe one day, (it) could be lower than 38kWh.

“In other words, the conversion cost and production of hydrogen will be cheaper, and Sarawak is working together with Petronas (on this),” he said.

He highlighted this during the Mechanical Completion of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of Fixed Offshore Structure Works for TIMI Field Development Project for Shell Sarawak Berhad celebration ceremony held at Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation (Demak Yard) here today.

Abang Johari further mentioned that he had learned about the new membrane technology during his visit to Petronas Research Centre.

He also noted that the briefing on the new membrane during the visit was given by a Sarawakian scientist who is an Iban from Sri Aman. — DayakDaily
