KUCHING, July 20: Sarawak must work with globally credible institutions especially in its new fields of carbon storage and green hydrogen production to gain worldwide recognition.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the products from Sarawak’s research and development (R&D) efforts must be recognised on a global scale for them to be reliable.

“Many have asked me why Sarawak wants to work together with NUS, the National University of Singapore. We do that because it has the network with credible institutions worldwide, and we need certification.

“If we produce, and the world does not recognise it, it will be meaningless. So, with this sort of approach, we hope to have our products certified worldwide and accepted by international markets.

“And that is our objective in Sarawak,” he said, while explaining Sarawak’s huge potential in carbon storage and biofuel production due to its biodiverse resources.

Abang Johari was witnessing the signing of two agreements between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) in Bangi, Kuala Lumpur today.

The first was the Hydrogen Electrolyser Supply Agreement for Darul Hana and Batu Kawa Hydrogen Refueling Station between Petronas Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd and SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd.

The second agenda was the signing of a Joint Technology Collaboration Agreement for Renewable Oil between Petronas Research Sdn Bhd and SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd.

Among those present were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Petronas president and group executive officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik, and SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain. — DayakDaily
