KUCHING, Dec 11: The setting up of the Sarawak Integrated Operation Centre (SIOC) by Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) is progressing well and is expected to be operational by the end of 2022.

Once operational, SMA said it will proliferate Smart City services such as crime detection and prevention as well as disaster relief, emergency response, smart mobility and environment monitoring in Sarawak.

The SIOC is the core engine of the Sarawak Smart City Operating System concept which was first revealed in the Kuching Smart City Master Plan 2021 -2025.

“The Smart City Operating System concept sets the design direction of open and inclusive digital services that could benefit everyone and be extended by government and non-government entities such as companies, communities, and individuals to tailor to specific demands.

“Recently, the concept of the Operating System had won the ’10+3 Digital Economy Innovation Awards’ competition in Yunnan, China and was recognised by the panel of international expert judges from Asean countries including China, Japan and South Korea,” the statement added.

Adopting an open-system environment, the SIOC includes, but not limited to, an operation centre for planning, directing, monitoring, and coordinating a wide variety of activities particularly those associated with Smart City and Digital Economy initiatives with multiple collaborators and service recipients including local authorities, government agencies, third party commercial and non-commercial entities as well as public.

The centralised digital platform also helps to identify and respond to designated, critical and emergency situations in as close to real-time as possible, as well as providing digital services to third party solutions.

The SIOC digital platform is also connected with sensors and input-output infrastructure including CCTV system and telemetry stations.

SMA pointed out that it has one of the most advanced computing power in Sarawak, which can be shared virtually to government agencies, businesses and institutions of higher learning to spark new innovations in the digital economy.

“For example, if there is a snatch-theft incident within the SIOC’s CCTV covered areas, the SIOC platform system will automatically trigger action parties for immediate action.

“The system will also be able to trace back the historical data to match elements captured by the CCTV, including car plate numbers, face recognition and more.”

For citizens, an integrated mobile app is being created for users to send distress alarms, obtain tourism-related information, make digital payments, report events and incidents and so on.

SMA emphasised that the SIOC is architectured such that the services could evolve based on the responses and demands from users.

With this SIOC and other initiatives, SMA is committed to continue to unleash the potential of technologies to support and facilitate the growth of the Sarawak Digital Economy. — DayakDaily
