KUCHING, April 25: Sarawak will introduce and implement more environmental-related ordinances in line with its agenda to promote green energy and environmental conservation.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has affirmed the Sarawak government’s dedication to environmental protection and conservation efforts which will continue to be done in years to come.

“In Malaysia, Sarawak is a pioneer in emphasising the importance of environmental protection. Now that we have embarked on carbon credits, and along with our renewable energy, we are on the right track.

“Hydropower is clean energy and we will not focus too much on energy production from fossils,” he said when met at Deputy Minister of Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali’s Hari Raya open house at Wisma Sabati yesterday (April 24, 2023).

Stressing the importance of educating people on environmental matters, Abdul Karim said there will come a time when the laws and ordinances will need to be amended and enacted to ensure the environment will be well maintained.

He added that even the global tourism industry has embraced ‘responsible tourism’ to reduce pollution and promote a clean environment.

“That’s also why we have the Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) and other statutory bodies to take care of our environment,” he added. — DayakDaily
