KUCHING, May 31: Sarawak is intensifying efforts to attract high-value investments from South Korea, particularly in renewable energy, aerospace and advanced manufacturing, as it positions itself as a key player in the new economy under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
According to a press release, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan recently held a courtesy call with Malaysia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Dato’ Mohd Zamruni Khalid, at the Ambassador’s official residence in Seoul, where discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between the Embassy of Malaysia in Seoul and federal agencies, including the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).
The meeting focused on coordinated efforts to promote Sarawak as a competitive investment destination for high-technology and sustainable industries, in line with both federal and State aspirations to develop aerospace and semiconductor hubs in the region.
Over the past five years, Sarawak has recorded a total of RM116 billion in investments across the primary, services and manufacturing sectors, reflecting growing investor confidence in the State’s economic transformation agenda.
Among notable South Korean investors already operating in Sarawak are companies such as OCI and Lotte, which are involved in advanced manufacturing and related industries.
Awang Tengah expressed hope that more South Korean companies will follow suit, emphasising that such investments bring significant socio-economic benefits to Sarawak, particularly in creating business opportunities and high-quality jobs for locals.
He stressed that private investment remains a key growth engine under PCDS 2030, as Sarawak accelerates its shift towards a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy.
Both the Embassy of Malaysia in Seoul and federal agencies, including MIDA and MATRADE, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Sarawak’s investment promotion efforts, in alignment with Malaysia’s broader strategy to strengthen the State’s role as a regional hub for aerospace and semiconductor industries. — DayakDaily
