KUCHING, Sept 10: The ASEAN Secretariat is handling efforts to address transboundary haze through diplomatic channels, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Asked whether Sarawak was collaborating with neighbouring countries to reduce the recurrence of haze, Abang Johari said the matter was being managed at the ASEAN level.
“This is managed by the ASEAN Secretariat. It is up to them, diplomatically,” he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the Sarawak SHInE International Conference (SHInE) 2026 at Imperial Hotel here today.
His remarks come as Sarawak continues to experience the effects of the current haze episode, with deteriorating air quality prompting authorities to implement precautionary measures in affected areas.
The haze has also affected outdoor activities and raised concerns over public health, particularly among vulnerable groups, as air quality deteriorates.
Sarawak authorities have been monitoring the Air Pollutant Index (API), with areas recording unhealthy readings placed under closer monitoring and precautionary measures.
At the regional level, transboundary haze has long been addressed through ASEAN cooperation, including diplomatic engagement among member states. — DayakDaily
