SARIKEI, May 7: The Phase 2B upgrade of the Bayong Water Treatment Plant, costing RM68.4 million, has been fully completed, reaffirming the Sarawak government’s strong commitment to meeting the rising demand for clean water in the region.
In a TVS news report, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, said the project, which was entirely funded by the Sarawak government, significantly increases the plant’s capacity from 70 million litres per day to 100 million litres, while also enhancing the existing water supply system.
“In addition to Sarikei, areas such as Tanjung Manis, Belawai, and Pulau Bruit will also benefit from this upgraded facility,” he told reporters during a visit to the Bayong Water Treatment Centre today.
The project scope includes the construction of a new treatment plant with a capacity of 30 million litres per day, a raw water intake facility, installation of raw water pipelines, and related infrastructure works.
To ensure a reliable and high-quality water supply in the Sarikei Division, Julaihi said the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) remains committed to completing all ongoing projects on schedule.
“These efforts will not only expand water supply coverage but also address related issues in a comprehensive and effective manner,” he added.
Julaihi stressed that the Sarawak government, through its ministry and JBALB as the implementing agency, is dedicated to continuously upgrading water infrastructure across Sarikei.
In a related development, he announced that the Julau Water Supply Project (Package 1), with a total cost of RM25.7 million, is currently progressing well.
The project includes the construction of a new water treatment plant with a 3.4 million-litre-per-day capacity, a raw water intake and pump station, and the installation of a 28-kilometre pipeline.
“Once completed by the end of 2025, the project will significantly benefit residents in Julau and surrounding areas by providing a more consistent and sustainable water supply,” he said. — DayakDaily
