SERIAN, July 15: The long-awaited RM28.8 million Batang Sadong Bridge, connecting Kampung Sorak Melayu and Kampung Sorak Sumpung, is expected to be completed on May 5, 2028, significantly improving connectivity and accessibility while empowering local socioeconomic activities in Bukit Semuja.
Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus said the project, implemented under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), was aimed at addressing longstanding connectivity challenges, particularly those faced by residents during flood occurrences.
In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), he said the idea for the bridge was conceived during his tenure as an assistant administrative officer at the Serian District Office, where he witnessed firsthand the difficulties residents encountered when travelling to Serian, as well as the challenges faced by disaster management teams in delivering assistance during floods.
“Today, a long-awaited dream has finally become a reality. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the people’s representative and to work together in realising a project that has been highly anticipated by residents in this area,” he said during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Batang Sadong Bridge project at Kampung Sorak Sumpung here today.
John also expressed his appreciation to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the Sarawak government’s continuous commitment through GKCDA in implementing development projects that directly benefit the people.
The project, which will be completed within a 24-month construction period from May 5, 2026 to May 5, 2028, involves the construction of a 100-metre bridge across Batang Sadong, a paved road built according to the R3 two-lane, two-way road standard, and a new road alignment stretching approximately 1.7km.
Upon completion, the bridge is expected to benefit residents of Kampung Sorak Melayu, Kampung Sorak Sumpung, Kampung Sorak Mawang, Koran Bari, Koran Mawang and Koran Plaman by reducing travel time to Serian town, facilitating daily activities and stimulating local economic growth.
John added that 26 other development projects worth RM98.57 million had been implemented in the Bukit Semuja constituency through GKCDA, reflecting the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to accelerating rural development and enhancing the wellbeing of the people. — DayakDaily
