KUCHING, June 20: Repair works for the major pipe leakage at Batu 7 Jalan Miri-Bintulu near PUSPAKOM, which had affected about 65,000 residents around the area, was completed at 12.30pm yesterday.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the flushing work is currently in progress.

“It is with great regret that these affected consumers had to suffer the inconvenience arising from the water supply interruptions since June 16 due to the major pipe dislocation and leakage caused by ground settlement.

“The water supply to the affected water consumers in Miri city will be normalised in stages as the recovery period differs from one area to another depending on the location and distance of the premises from the source of supply.

“Water pressure to all the affected areas will slowly build up to normal pressure, and these areas are expected to be fully supplied by today,” said Julaihi in a press statement today.

He said alternative supply through water tankers would continue to be provided to affected areas, especially those located on high ground and at the far end of the water supply system while waiting for the water pressure to build up to the normal level.

For the long-term solution, LAKU Management Sdn Bhd CEO Daniel Punang said the agency plans to relocate its pipelines outside the Pan Borneo Highway to avoid any untoward incident from happening to its pipelines. — DayakDaily
