KUCHING, April 21: The construction of the Rembus Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) Depot is currently in progress, with the current focus being on piling works, specifically for its mechanical workshop, as reported by Sarawak Metro.

According to Sarawak Metro’s Facebook post from yesterday (April 20), the depot, located in Rembus, Kota Samarahan, will serve as the main hub for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS).

“This 54-acre facility will include a mechanical workshop, a stabling yard, hydrogen refuelling facilities, a test track, an infrastructure workshop, an administration building, and an operations control centre,” read the post.

Sarawak Metro also stated that the Rembus ART Depot will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025, coinciding with the Blue Line’s Stage 1 ART passenger service launch.

For the record, Sarawak Metro, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), is currently implementing the KUTS project, which is overseen by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS), to reduce traffic congestion while also boosting productivity and economic development.

The KUTS project is being developed in phases, with Phase 1 comprising three main lines: the 27.6km Blue Line from Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in Kuching city centre; the 12.3km Red Line from Kuching Sentral to Pending; and the 30km Green Line, stretching from Pending to Damai.

The KUTS project’s backbone is the ART vehicles, which will be supported by feeder buses.

Both vehicles will be powered by green hydrogen, supporting Sarawak’s decarbonisation efforts and aligning with the state’s agenda for advancing the hydrogen economy. — DayakDaily
