KUCHING, April 13: Construction work for the autonomous rapid transit (ART) station near the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan has commenced today.

In a post shared on its social media, Sarawak Metro advised motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic signages when navigating through the construction zone for their safety and to ensure smooth traffic flow.

From the photos uploaded, workers have installed high plastic safety barricades around the construction zone, and heavy machinery, including pilling work, is already on-site.

The ‘SM05’ ART station is part of the Blue Line network, extending from Rembus Depot in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in the city centre.

The ART network under the Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS) project is being developed in phases. Phase 1 also includes the Red Line from Kuching Sentral to Pending and the Green Line from Pending to Damai, apart from the Blue Line.

Covering a total distance of 70 kilometres, Phase 1 of the KUTS project is scheduled to begin passenger service in stages, starting in the fourth quarter of 2025, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Construction for the Rembus Depot, covering an area of about 54 acres, is also underway. The depot will house a stabling yard, hydrogen refuelling facilities, test track, mechanical workshop, infrastructure workshop, administration building, and operation control centre.

It is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, coinciding with the opening of Stage 1 of the ART passenger service for the Blue Line. — DayakDaily
