KUCHING, July 6: Safety will not be compromised in the reopening of the damaged Ramp 1 at the Selangau Interchange, with the government insisting the route will remain closed until repair works are completed and the structure is certified safe.

Following an inspection of the site today, Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi acknowledged growing public concern over the closure of the ramp, saying the issue had attracted widespread attention in the media and on social media.

“In my view, every concern raised by the people must be taken seriously, especially when it involves the safety of users of the Pan Borneo Highway,” he said in a Facebook post.

According to a technical briefing at the site, the damage was caused when a palm oil tanker crashed into the Ramp 1 structure, damaging part of the retaining wall panels and the structural section near Abutment B.

Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, stressed that repair works would be carried out in a controlled and systematic manner to ensure the stability of the affected area and avoid creating additional risks to motorists.

Road sections unaffected by the damage will be reopened in stages once they are declared safe, while the damaged section will remain closed until repairs are fully completed.

He said he had instructed the relevant agencies to prioritise three key areas: ensuring road user safety, closely monitoring the repair schedule to avoid unnecessary delays, and providing the public with clear updates on alternative routes, road closures and work progress.

“I understand that the road closure has caused inconvenience to users, particularly residents and those who frequently travel along the Bintulu–Mukah–Sibu route. However, safety must remain the top priority before any section of the road is reopened.

“Thank you to everyone who has continued to provide feedback. Constructive comments help the government and the implementing agencies respond more quickly and responsibly.

“I will continue to monitor the progress of the repair works at the Selangau Interchange until the route is fully restored and safe for public use,” he said. — DayakDaily
