KUCHING, Oct 30: The public is reminded not to fall for political scare tactics that the opposition will use to gain support in the upcoming general election, as well as not to select the wrong candidate.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president and Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, said that the opposition’s ploy of discrediting the government for allegedly seizing native customary rights (NCR) land is a “politics of fear” tactic that is frequently used during election season to gain political support.

“The government never does what the opposition claims, but rather ensures that every legal regulation is followed if it is implemented,” Awang Tengah said on Saturday (Oct 29) during a speech at the “Pemung, Peruyud, dan Petuuh” programme at the Kampung Long Tuan Hall in Trusan, Lawas.

He said that the opposition’s strategy of exploiting racial issues to gain political support during the election is also ineffective because the Sarawak government treats all citizens equally, regardless of background.

“This was demonstrated by the establishment of the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), whose role is to look after the welfare of the State’s other religions,” he added.

Furthermore, Awang Tengah who is also the Bukit Sari assemblyman, wants the people of Trusan to give Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) strong support and a big victory in the 15th General Election (GE15).

“The broad mandate granted to GPS will strengthen Sarawak’s voice in advocating for the State’s rights and interests, particularly in relation to Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report.

“We want a big victory not just in Lawas, but throughout Sarawak, so that our voice in Parliament is stronger and we can fight for the rights and interests of this State as stated in MA63 and the IGC Report,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, incumbent Lawas Member of Parliament (MP) and Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia deputy minister Datuk Henry Sum Agong, urged the people of Lawas not to make a mistake when voting in GE15.

“The wrong decision will only harm the people in the area, especially those who want to benefit from the government’s planned development,” Sum stressed.
