Prolonged lack of rainfall may push water treatment plants in Sri Aman, Mukah into critical stage, says minister

Datuk Julaihi Narawi

KUCHING, April 24: Report low water pressure or no water supply to the respective water authorities for immediate action, says Datuk Julaihi Narawi.

Julaihi, who is Minister for Utility and Telecommunications (MUT) Sarawak, said several areas throughout Sarawak may experience water supply issues such as low water pressure with the onset of the hot and dry spell.

“In addition, several water treatment plants may be affected by insufficient raw water and could reach critical stage, such as Melugu and Pantu Water Treatment Plants (WTP) in Sri Aman and Penibong WTP in Mukah, if there is still no rain in the coming weeks.

“The situation at water sources and other water supply facilities in each of the drought affected areas in Sarawak are being monitored closely by the water supply authorities,” he said in statement today.

According to Julaihi, water tankers are now on standby ready to be mobilized to areas without water supply if prolonged dry weather persists.

In addition, he said water collection centres will be set up at strategic locations, the information for which will be published and updated periodically, for the affected areas.

“We are very concerned with the water issue problem during dry spell affecting consumers,” he added.

He said the matter is also now taken up under the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“With the ongoing festive season of Hari Raya and long holidays, consumers are encouraged to conserve and use water prudently such as by reducing outdoor watering, and repairing all leaking pipes and faucets immediately,” Julaihi said.

Consumers are also urged to report to their respective water supply authorities if there are external pipe leakages for immediate repairs.

For further inquiries and assistance, consumers may contact the water supply authorities’ hotlines as follows: Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) at 082-262211, Kuching Water Board at 082- 222 222, Sibu Water Board at 013-8106311, and LAKU Management at 085-426626(Miri), 086-318160 (Bintulu) and 085-215 644 (Limbang). — DayakDaily
