MIRI, June 13: The rich cultural heritage of the Dayak community — exemplified by the graceful Datun Julut dance and the soulful sounds of the traditional Sape — must be preserved and cherished by the younger generation as a vital legacy that shapes the identity of the Orang Ulu community in Sarawak.
In a Sarawak Public Commnication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang emphasised that these cultural expressions are not mere performances but profound symbols of respect for the history and heritage of Sarawak’s indigenous peoples.
“Datun Julut is a symbolic dance of thanksgiving, marked by elegant movements adorned with bird feathers, and accompanied by the stirring sounds of the Sape — the voice of tradition that resonates deeply with our spiritual essence,” he said when officiating the 2025 Datun Julut and Traditional Sape Competition held at the Forum Cultural Centre, in celebration of the Gawai Dayak festival on Thursday (June 12).
He added that the beauty of such traditions reflects Sarawak’s unique character, a land enriched by its ethnic diversity and time-honoured customs.
“Safeguarding this cultural heritage is a shared responsibility, especially for the younger generation who will inherit this land and its traditions.
“Dayak cultural traditions are central to our identity. They must be preserved with reverence so they are not lost to the passage of time,” he stressed.
Liwan also highlighted that Gawai is more than just a public holiday or a social celebration — it is a bridge of unity that brings people of all races together through mutual appreciation of each other’s cultural heritage.
“Through this competition, we celebrate the spirit of Segulai Sejalai — walking together in harmony and unity,” he said.
Also in attendance were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala, Baram MP Dato Anyi Ngau, Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau and other distinguished guests. — DayakDaily
