Premier’s move to improve salary scheme for Sarawak’s civil servants much welcomed, says GPS sec gen

Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi

KUCHING, Feb 10: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary general Datuk Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi welcomes the suggestion by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on the proposed improvement in the salary scheme for Sarawak’s civil servants.

Nanta said that such an effort would attract more people in Sarawak, not only the Chinese, but other races to join the region’s public service.

“This initiative needs to be supported through the implementation of a fairer, and more equitable recruitment system to ensure that various ethnic groups in Sarawak get equal opportunities to participate in the civil service,” he said in a Facebook post today.

“For example, the Dayak and Chinese ethnic groups often feel marginalised and do not get a fair chance at getting employment opportunities in the public service,” he added.

Nanta, who is also Minister of Works and Kapit MP, recommended that the Sarawak government needs to establish a quota system at the recruitment level.

“This can be seen in the low percentage of involvement among other ethnic groups and non-Malays who hold high positions in the administration of the central and state governments,” he said.

Nanta, however, applauded the Premier for the initiatives that have been taken since he took over the administration of the Sarawak government.

“The result can be seen in the increase in the involvement of other ethnic groups in public services in this region.

Nanta said he is happy to see appointments from ethnic groups and non-Malays who are entrusted in managing the highest posts in both Sarawak civil services and government-related companies (GLCs).

“The premier’s direction in the recruitment system by holding the philosophy of meritocracy should be used as a guide to ensure fair opportunities for all,” he said. — DayakDaily
