KUCHING, May 24: Amid Sarawak’s push towards a digital economy and high-technology sectors, efforts by the Teochew community to preserve its traditional opera and music continue to feature alongside broader State development plans.

According to a TVS news report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said cultural preservation remains important even as the State advances in renewable energy, hydrogen development, green economy initiatives and digital transformation.

“Young people are encouraged to stay connected to their cultural roots, including participation in traditional arts such as opera and music, even as digital technologies reshape daily life,” he said in his speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the 105th anniversary gala dinner of the Teo Khiaw Kuching association here on Saturday (May 23).

Beyond cultural matters, Abang Johari also acknowledged the Teochew community’s longstanding contributions to Sarawak’s development particularly in business, education, culture and social welfare over more than a century.

He said the State government is currently implementing major infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, a new international airport and a deep-sea port, as part of efforts to strengthen Sarawak’s long-term economic position.

In addition, Abang Johari said Sarawak is building a new economic foundation centred on high-value industries while also establishing a sovereign wealth fund to manage resource revenues for future generations.

On education development, he noted that Sarawak has recognised the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and introduced free higher education at State-owned institutions to widen access to learning opportunities.

He added that Sarawak’s strength lies in its multi-ethnic society, which continues to serve as a foundation for stability and sustained development in the State.

Among those present at the event were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap and organising chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok. — DayakDaily
