KUCHING, Oct 5: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wants Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to take the lead in conducting research on enhancing the growth of sago and utilising sago waste for the production of methane as an energy source.

The Premier stated that he recently met with experts in the field of sago, and that they are currently looking into the production of methane from sago.

“Sago is a wildlife plant. Sago plants do not need to be planted because they grow on their own.

“Perhaps there is a technology to multiply the growth of sago and use sago waste-to-energy. I hope that Unimas will take a leading role in this research,” he said before launching the 1st Natural Science and Technology Conference 2023 (NASTEC2023), organised by Unimas’ Faculty of Resource Science and Technology at a local hotel here, which was streamed live via Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.

Abang Johari went on to say that the Sarawak government is investing in research to better understand the State’s biodiversity using modern science and technology to safeguard natural heritage.

“As you know, we are working together with the indigenous communities, acknowledging their role and also their knowledge as custodians of the land and promoting sustainable land management practices that preserve both culture and diversity,” he added.

Meanwhile, in his welcoming speech, Unimas vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi remarked that the conference represents an opportunity to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and forge collaborations that transcend disciplinary boundaries among international and local participants.

According to a Unimas press handout, 1st NASTEC2023 is centred around the theme, ‘Sustaining Biodiversity Across Cultures and Research Through Science and Technology’.

“With attendees numbering over 100, including representatives from local institutions, research agencies, and international delegates from countries such as India, Indonesia, Japan, and Brunei, this conference serves as a vital platform for the exchange of cutting-edge research findings, technological advancements, and strategies for promoting sustainable development,” read the press handout.

Among others present at the event were Associate Professor Dr Samsur Mohamad, Dean of the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, along with 1st NASTEC2023 organising chairpersons Professor Dr Zainab Ngaini and Professor Dr Ramlah Zainudin. — DayakDaily
