PM: Bintulu Port handover milestone in MA63 implementation, model for resolving national issues

BINTULU, June 21: The completion of the Bintulu Port handover to Sarawak demonstrates the commitment of both the federal and State governments to implementing provisions enshrined in the Federal Constitution and the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the transition was achieved through mature and constructive negotiations without any pressure.

He said this makes it a model of cooperation between the state and federal governments in resolving issues of national importance.

“Today is a historic day because what we promised based on the Constitution and the spirit of MA63 has been fulfilled through mutual understanding, trust and a strong working relationship between the federal and Sarawak governments,” he said.

He said this at the cheque handover ceremony following the conversion of Bintulu Port from a federal port to a state port at the Bintulu Port Authority (BPA) here today, as reported by the Malaysian Information Department (JaPen) Sarawak.

He also described Sarawak as an emerging economic powerhouse in the region, driven by developments in the energy, high-technology, green economy, and competitive resource-based industries sectors.

During the ceremony, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg handed over a cheque totalling RM1.8 billion to Anwar.

Among those present were Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke, Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
