KUCHING, July 20: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak has vowed to solve the issue of statelessness in the State within a one year period if it wins the 12th Sarawak State Elections.

Its information chief Abun Sui Anyit said the party is concerned over the recent media reports on the ongoing issue of Sarawakian natives with no identification documents.

He said since the formation of Malaysia 58 years ago, the government has set a timeframe to solve the issue of statelessness but it still remains an issue to this day.

“It is undeniable that the problem of the lack of identity cards is a huge loss because they cannot enjoy the facilities provided by government agencies such as B40 assistance, welfare, medical costs and others. Even some who once fought for the country still do not have an identity card even though they are over 80-years-old.

“Therefore, PKR is determined that if given a mandate by the people of Sarawak to rule the State after the state polls, the problem of lack of identity cards as citizens among the people of Sarawak will be resolved within one year,” he said in a statement today.

He also said the solution to this lack of citizenship requires a really serious and honest political determination to give justice to those who are truly deserving, especially those from Sarawak and in the category of ethnic people who come from and have ties to Sarawak. – DayakDaily
