Bobby ... race and religion has never been an issue in Sarawak.

MIRI, March 17: Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) president Bobby William emphasised that race and religion have never been an issue in Sarawak.

And he feels that if Malaya keeps harping on race and religious issues which are not in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA 63), it is high time for Sarawak to leave the Federation.

“This is not politicising,” he said when contacted today.

He pointed out that race and religion have never been an issue for Sarawak.

“The Sarawak government must know this and must not keep quiet,” he said.

“Our forefathers when negotiating the terms under MA63 have never been informed of the issue of race and religion as conditions to form the federation,” he reckoned.

Therefore, he urged the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Sarawak rulling coalition, to state their stand on the matter.

Bobby was asked to respond to a comment by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ahmad Marzuk Shaary that several new Syariah legislations will be created and others amended under a five-year plan.

Ahmad Marzuk disclosed that among the changes afoot will be amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) and introducing a Control and Restriction on the Propagation of the Non-Muslims’ Religions Bill.

Bobby believes that the creation of such legislation is discriminatory, oppresive, against basic human rights and religious freedom as Sarawak has no official religion. -DayakDaily
