Padungan rep: Lorong 24 of Stampin Resettlement Scheme too narrow, fails to meet needs

Chong Chieng Jen

KUCHING, June 13: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen has urged the State Public Works Department (JKR) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to ensure that alternative routes are wide enough to cater for road-users when constructions are underway in certain locations.

Citing specifically the bridge construction project connecting the Stutong Resettlement Scheme to Sg Tapang and Samarahan which was approved during Pakatan Harapan government’s time but only implementated last year, he said the alternative road provided is not wide enough to cater for the need of the road-users.

“For the construction project, JKR has closed Lorong 28 of the Stutong Resettlement Scheme and designated Lorong 24 as the alternative access road for two years, the estimated time for the completion of the bridge project.

“I have received complaints from the residents around Lorong 24 to 28 of Stampin Resettlement Scheme that Lorong 24 is too narrow.

“As it is now the designated access road, there is now constant flow of large lorris and cement trucks along Lorong 24 which caused great inconvenience and danger to the residents,” he said in a statement today.

Chong confirmed that the Lorong 24 is too narrow for lorries and trucks after his visit to the site with his assistant Michael Kong today.

“We urge JKR and MBKS to take immediate action and work together to resolve the issue.

“As a general policy, JKR and MBKS should ensure that the alternate access road for any government construction project must be wide enough and safety measures are in place. This is especially so, if the designated access road is in a housing estate,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
