KUCHING, June 21: More than 200 residents in Vista Perdana, Senadin have submitted applications for piped gas connections through a special counter initiative, which will be used by Sarawak Gas and PETROS to assess project feasibility based on actual demand.

According to a report from TVS, the special application counter was jointly organised by the Padang Kerbau and Tanjong Batu Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), alongside Sarawak Gas and Petros.

Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that this mass-application approach was introduced to simplify the process for residents who previously had to navigate a more complex individual application procedure.

“A special counter was opened to make it easier for residents in this area to apply for piped gas connections.

“We are working with Sarawak Gas under PETROS because individual applications are more complicated to process,” he said.

He noted that the initiative received an overwhelming response, with over 200 residents showing up in person on a Sunday to submit their forms and seek direct clarification from the relevant agencies.

“This shows that residents are serious and have a real need for piped gas supply in this area. We chose Sunday so that working residents would have more time to come, fill in the forms, and get explanations on the application process and related costs,” he added.

Lee, who is also Sarawak Transport Minister highlighted that this centralized method allows Petros and Sarawak Gas to gauge actual demand before making any final implementation decisions, cautioning that the project may not proceed if application numbers are too low.

Touching on the expenses, Lee revealed that the standard installation cost charged by Sarawak Gas is approximately RM1,940, which covers development costs, the meter, the regulator, and a deposit.

Any additional costs will depend on the consumer’s choice of appointed contractor. To ensure fairness, residents are given the option to obtain quotations from approved contractors to compare prices and choose the most suitable package.

Moving forward, Lee assured that this streamlined initiative will be expanded to other areas within the Senadin constituency that demonstrate strong demand for piped gas.

The programme is part of the ongoing efforts by the Senadin DUN Service Centre to enhance access to basic utilities through more efficient service delivery systems. — DayakDaily
