SEBUYAU, Feb 4: Private oil palm plantations must also bear responsibility for funding the construction of more effective drainage and irrigation systems, including the necessary ‘tidal DID gates’ in addition to government allocations.
In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi stressed the need to reassess the drainage and irrigation systems in Sebuyau District to ensure they are more efficient and capable of managing water flow, particularly from the extensive oil palm plantations surrounding villages and longhouses.
He raised this concern yesterday (Feb 3) after visiting several temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Sebuyau to assess the conditions of flood victims and distribute aid.
The Sebuyau assemblyman began his visit at PPS Dewan Kampung Lutong Sebangan, where he engaged with flood victims and personally listened to their needs and concerns.
He then proceeded to PPS Dewan Kampung Arus Melayu and PPS Dewan Kampung Bajong Tengah to inspect the conditions of the relocated residents.
Julaihi and his delegation concluded their visit at PPS Dewan Pembangunan Sebuyau, where he reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring that adequate assistance reaches all affected flood victims.
During the visit, the delegation also distributed essential supplies to those affected and provided food aid to personnel stationed at the four PPS in Sebuyau District.
The visit also aimed to identify the types of assistance required and the most effective methods for delivering food aid to affected residents.
Julaihi assured that aid would be delivered promptly to safeguard the well-being of those impacted by the floods.
Meanwhile, one of the flood victims, 72-year-old Lampu Kedit, expressed gratitude to the Sarawak government’s support during their stay at the PPS.
“I am thankful to the government and all parties who have helped us since we were relocated to the PPS. This assistance means a lot during these difficult times,” he said.
Also present were Sebuyau District officer Ayuradiman Bujang, Sarawak JBALB director Ir Awang Mohamad Fadilah Awang Redzuan, and Simunjan District Police chief DSP Rafhan Kepli. — DayakDaily
