KUCHING, March 23: Of the total 2,500 late birth registration applications from Sarawak between 2020 to 2022, more than half of them totalling 1,738 of them have been approved.

Senator Datuk Paul Igai said out of the total applications in the same period of time, 91 applications were rejected and 671 of them are still under consideration.

Paul obtained the statistics from the National Registration Department (NRD) when raising queries on the statistics of late registration applications.

He was informed by the Senate that for late registration of birth, the NRD will keep a record under late birth registration and a late birth registration certificate will be issued.

Based on NRD records, the total number of late birth registration applications in Sarawak from 2020 until 2022 totalled 2,500 applications.

Of that total, 1,738 applications have been approved, 91 applications have been rejected and 671 applications are under consideration.

On Igai’s second question if NRD will continue the Menyemai Kasha Rakyat (Mekar) programme, he has been informed that the department will continue as NRD is committed to providing service for all regardless of their background and their place of birth within the country.

The Mekar programme is an initiative to facilitate those having difficulties to be physically present at the NRD for birth, death and identity card registration.
