KUCHING, Dec 16: No one should take away the thunder of the late Tok Nan’s (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) legacy in starting the Sarawak sentiment to fight for its rights.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for N12 Kota Sentosa said it would be sad if anyone were to claim credit for Adenan’s contribution now that the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2021 based on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) has been passed in Parliament.

“Everybody knows that it was Tok Nan who started this. And if anyone wants to take away the thunder of Tok Nan’s legacy, I feel that it’s very sad.

“Because here we are talking about a great leader, a leader who started a lot of things,” said Yap.

He said that Adenan was the one who got the ball rolling by saying that Sarawak is big enough for everybody and it should have its rights returned as part of the Federation of Malaysia to be able to speak up at the ‘adult table’.

Yap was hitting back at certain quarters who tried to belittle GPS’ effort in realising the amendment to the Federal Constitution based on MA63 which marks the beginning of Sarawak’s journey in claiming back its rights.

Meanwhile, Yap commended Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar who managed to push through the amendment in Parliament.

“Dr Wan Junaidi carried forward the amendment where the Opposition failed, where DAP (Democratic Action Party) failed.

“And now, we are known as Borneo States of Sarawak and Sabah,” he said during his Facebook live session last night (Dec 15).

On Dec 14, the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2021 related to MA63 was passed with a two-thirds majority following its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat in Kuala Lumpur, with 199 out of 222 Members of Parliament (MPs) supporting the Bill while 21 MPs were not present. — DayakDaily
