ASAJAYA, June 8: A newly rebranded housing aid initiative under the federal government, known as Program Perumahan Rakyat Sejahtera (PPRS), is set to benefit hundreds of low-income families across Sarawak with RM107 million allocated this year alone.
The programme, which replaces the previous housing assistance model–Program Perumahan Rakyat Termiskin (PPRT), focuses on building new homes or repairing existing ones for families in need, with strict vetting by local district offices to ensure only the most deserving receive help.
Malaysian Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Datuk Rubiah Wang said many applications in Sarawak have been approved and are already in the construction phase.
“Applications are prioritised based on recommendations from the district poverty-focused committee and endorsed by the District Office.
“This ensures transparency and that only eligible individuals benefit,” she told reporters after attending Aidiladha korban meat presentation ceremony held at Darul Ehsan Mosque in Kampung Asajaya Laut here today.
Rubiah who is Kota Samarahan MP further revealed that for Asajaya alone, 14 new houses have been approved under PPRS, while several repair works are also set to begin in phases.
She urged local elected representatives to channel all applications through the District Office for proper screening and verification.
The PPRS aims to improve housing quality and security for Malaysia’s poorest communities, with ongoing implementation expected throughout the year. – DayakDaily
