New Covid-19 cluster detected in Lorong Cahaya Mata as Sarawak logs 1,206 new cases, 1 death in Sibu

KUCHING, March 3: A new Covid-19 cluster has emerged at Lorong Cahaya Maju in Petra Jaya here with 18 positive cases, while Sarawak logged 1,206 new cases and one brought-in-dead (BID) case in Sibu.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its latest update on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, reported that the new community cluster, which involved one family, has also spread to the workplace resulting in a second generation of cases.

The spread of the infection was suspected to have originated from close contact between family members and colleagues at the workplace who were infected.


The index case was a local man who was detected through symptomatic screening at a private healthcare facility on Feb 25.

With that, there are now four active clusters in Sarawak, with the existing three not registering an increase in cases.

A total of 39 individuals linked to the cluster have been tested, out of which 21 tested negative for Covid-19.

On the sole Covid-19 death in Sibu, it involved a 35-year-old man with chronic obstructive lung disease.

As for the daily caseload today, Kuching continues to top the list with 450 cases followed by Sibu (188) and Miri (166).

A total of 13 districts saw double digit cases namely Bintulu (75), Limbang (33), Serian (32), Samarahan (28), Lawas (22), Sarikei and Bau (21 each), Sri Aman (18), Subis (17), Belaga (15), Kapit (14), Mukah (13) and Kanowit (10).

Nineteen districts that recorded single digit increase in cases are Betong (9); Saratok and Matu (8 each); Dalat and Selangau (7 each), Kabong and Marudi (6 each), Julau (5); Tanjung Manis (4); Pusa, Meradong and Tatau (3 each); Asajaya, Lubok Antu, Song, Pakan, Sebauh and Telang Usan (2 each); while Lundu and Daro has one case each.

The latest figures thus pushed the overall State Covid-19 tally to 263,623 and death toll to 1,629.

Of the new cases, there are four in severe condition with three classified under Category 3 with pneumonia and one under Category 5 with pneumonia and requiring ventilator support.

There are 778 cases under Category 2 with mild symptoms and 424 cases under Category 1 with no symptoms.

Meanwhile, the police have issued 12 compounds in Kuching in the past 24 hours for various violations of standard operating procedures (SOP).

Ten compounds were issued for failure to check in at premises with the MySejahtera app and two for failure to wear face masks. — DayakDaily
