KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is collecting information on residents whose house roofs were damaged by recent storms and strong winds, with the details to be submitted to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) for consideration of assistance.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council had mobilised its councillors, community leaders and staff to conduct ground assessments and document the extent of damage following the severe weather in recent days.
He said several households had suffered roof damage as a result of the strong winds, describing the incident as a natural disaster.
“Following the incident, myself, my councillors, community leaders and staff went around most of the affected areas to assess the situation and the extent of damage to residential areas and some commercial properties,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.
Wee said MBKS had subsequently prepared a report on the damage and difficulties faced by affected residents and briefed the SDMC on the situation.
Following the briefing, he said the SDMC had requested MBKS to register affected residents and submit the details for further consideration and possible assistance.
“We have requested for some assistance to be provided. Now we have to collect all this information in order to put it to them,” he said.
Wee urged residents whose homes were affected to cooperate with MBKS councillors, community leaders and staff who are going around neighbourhoods to distribute and collect application forms.
He said the council would assist affected residents with the registration process and compilation of supporting documents, including photographs of the damage.
Among the information required are the applicant’s full name, MyKad number, house address, contact number and photographs showing the damage caused by the strong winds.
The completed applications will be compiled by MBKS before being forwarded to the SDMC for further processing and consideration.
Affected residents can contact councillors Eric Tay (019-889 9186), Chai Ju Loon (012-899 6868), Albert Tay (019-829 1211) or Judy Kho (016-859 1592) for assistance with the registration process.
Wee said MBKS had also passed application forms to neighbours of some affected homeowners who were away when council personnel visited their homes.
“For those whom we have not yet managed to reach, please contact our councillors,” he said.
While he was unable to personally visit every affected area within the MBKS jurisdiction, Wee said councillors and community leaders had been actively conducting assessments and reporting the situation to the council.
He urged all affected residents to submit the required information and photographs as soon as possible to enable MBKS to compile the cases and forward them to the SDMC.
“We seek the collaboration from all affected residents to submit the required information to us as soon as possible, along with photographs. We work together and help one another to resolve the problems faced by the people following the disaster brought by the unpredictable weather conditions,” he said.
