Mukah Kaul Festival returns this April 19 to 27

MUKAH, Jan 10: The iconic Mukah Kaul Festival this year will take place from April 19 to 27 with an array of exciting activities planned.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi said the procession of the boats, Kaul Seraheng Kakan, will be held in the morning on April 26 followed by the official launch of the Mukah Kaul Festival 2025 on the same day.

The Keman Kaul feast event will take place the following day on April 27.

“Kaul Seraheng Kakan will be held on April 26, 2025 and will be followed by the inauguration of Kaul Mukah 2025 on the same day.

“While the Keman Kaul will be held on April 27, 2025. The Kaul Festival will start from April 19 to 27, 2025,” he said in a press conference after chairing the Coordination Meeting for the Organisation of Kaul Mukah 2025 yesterday.

Also present were ADUN Tellian Royston Valentine and Mukah Deputy Resident Shafrie Saili.

The Kaul Festival is a traditional festival celebrated by the Melanaus living along the coastal areas of Sarawak.

In the past, Kaul was looked upon a religious ceremony to appease the spirits of the sea, land, forest and farm, making it the most significant festival in the Melanau calendar year.

It is a ritual of purification and thanksgiving as well as one of propitiation for good fortune. It is held at the beginning of the Melanau calendar. — DayakDaily
