KUCHING, Aug 5: Sarawak is targeting 75 gold medals as it bids to retain the overall championship title at the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma XXII), scheduled to take place in Selangor from Aug 15 to 24.
Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and Chef de Mission of the Sarawak contingent Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said a total of 930 contingent members, including athletes and officials, will represent Sarawak at the Games, which will feature 37 sports and 469 events across various venues throughout the state.
He said Sarawak’s athletes are in peak condition and fully prepared, particularly in terms of technical readiness, to compete at the highest level.
“To emerge as champions, we are targeting 75 gold medals. At the 2024 Sukma held in Sarawak, we secured 76 gold medals. I am confident that if we achieve this target, we will once again be crowned overall champions,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Gerald said this during an appearance as a guest on Juh Randau talk show at the UKAS Studio today.
Elaborating on the preparations, he said the athletes have undergone comprehensive training programmes over the past two years, including participation in various competitions to strengthen their experience, sharpen their skills and ensure they are in optimal condition ahead of the Games.
“Most importantly, we have provided our athletes with the necessary space and opportunities to excel. Over the past two years, they have trained intensively, prepared thoroughly and gained valuable exposure through competitions. I am confident they are ready to deliver,” he said.
Gerald added that the contingent’s strong determination, coupled with systematic preparations and a competitive spirit, would be key factors in Sarawak’s efforts to successfully defend its Sukma overall championship title. — DayakDaily
