KOTA SAMARAHAN, July 10: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is in “double joy” as 83.6 per cent of the population in the Samarahan Division had received their first Covid-19 vaccine doses and more parties have come forward to assist the needy amid the pandemic.

MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos said with Samarahan Division topping the Covid-19 vaccination rate in Sarawak at 83.6 per cent as of July 8, he believed that Samarahan will be the safest division in Sarawak in two or three weeks’ time once the residents have completed their second doses.

“We (MPKS) are very happy because we have done our part. Prior to the good news, we have worked together with the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in providing the list of those who are to be vaccinated. This was done about a month ago.

“The fact that we worked together with Unimas and also the first council in Sarawak to help directly in this vaccination exercise, we were then able to achieve success of getting 83.6 per cent of the Samarahan population to be vaccinated,” he told reporters when gracing the MPKS’ Community Pantry Programme held at Everrise Supermarket in Desa Ilmu here today.

Minos also said that MPKS is the first council to initiate a food aid programme in collaboration with 14 supermarkets.

Apart from the intention of assisting the needy, he believed that such a programme would encourage more parties to come forward and do a similar charity to assist fellow Sarawakians who are heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Community Pantry programme has commenced since July 4 and will end this July 12.

Those in need can get the food assistance at 3pm daily at Aiman Mall, Emart Summer Mall, Farley Supermarket, H&L Supermarket, LePaPa Hypermarket, Unaco Supermarket, Choice Supermarket, Everwin, BB Supermarket, Everrise, any eight branches of CS Mini Market around Kuching and four branches of Sen Sen Trading.

Also present was MPKS councillor Dato Sim Kiang Chiok, who is also the Community Pantry organising chairman. — DayakDaily
