KUCHING, Feb 4: Mita Cake House’s (Mita) butter cake could be the next big thing for the cake industry in Sarawak after the famous ‘kek lapis’.

At the bakery at Jalan Tun Jugah here, members of the public are queuing to buy the cake for their family and friends outside Sarawak.

According to siblings Mimi and Deng AJ, who reside in Kuching, the bakery’s humble butter cake’s popularity suddenly soared after it was made viral by an artist and social media influencer from West Malaysia, Hael Husaini.

Mimi stated that his social media influence prompted the demand for butter cake from Mita Cake House to be in the limelight in recent days.

“We are queuing to get some for our family members in Kuala Lumpur,” she said.

Mimi further likened the cakes to the famous West Malaysian Gardenia buns that Sarawakians tend to buy in bulk as they are not readily available here.

“I am glad Mita went viral as we now have something to be proud of in the cake industry in Sarawak,” she told DayakDaily today.

Another Kuchingite, Khuzairi, said a family member is buying the cake to return to West Malaysia today, adding that they could only buy a maximum of two cakes per order.
