MIRI, August 11: The ceiling leakage in the emergency zone of Miri Hospital’s new building has prompted an urgent response from health officials.
Despite the disruption, hospital services remain unaffected, according to Deputy Minister for Health Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, who visited the site shortly after the incident.
“I just finished reviewing an incident that went viral on social media regarding the leakage of the roof structure of the area,” Lukanisman said during his visit around 1am today.
The leak, which occurred last night (Aug 10), reportedly caused by heavy rain, led to flooding in the triage room.
As a precaution, the green zone emergency area was temporarily relocated to the asthma bay, with alternative arrangements made for patient triage and access to the emergency zone.
Lukanisman, who was accompanied by Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong, sought clarification from the hospital’s administration about their contingency plans.
He expressed concerns about potential design failures that may have contributed to the water overflow and called for immediate action to repair the ceiling and assess other parts of the building for similar issues.
A contractor’s representative was also present during the visit to provide an explanation.
The hospital’s concessionaire has since taken steps to clean up the affected area and investigate the cause of the leak.
Lukanisman assured the public that the red and yellow emergency zones were not impacted, and services continued to operate as usual. The hospital is expected to release an official statement tomorrow (Aug 12).
“I ask for a full investigation and clarification from the authorities,” Lukanisman assured. — DayakDaily
