The hospital explained that the organ was donated by a 43-year-old deceased man, who pledged to donate his organ since 2014. It was his solemn wish to gift someone in need a second chance at life.

The complex kidney transplant surgery brought together a specialised team, including surgeons from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), namely Aaron Goh and Kamal Raj, the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) team consisting of Dr Engku Emilia Engku Awang and SN Mohammad Aliff Abdullah, with assistance from two Urology nurses, Siti Zulaikha Md Sidek and Liz Estevera Gabin.

In addition, Dr Uma Devi Ramadass from SGH’s Organ Procurement Unit and Miri Hospital’s senior medical team were also involved in the effort to successfully carry out the operation.

The team from Miri Hospital also extended their condolences and profound gratitude to the family of the organ donor.

“In this difficult moment, they made the decision with great courage and sincerity to allow the deceased’s organs to be donated.

“This great decision is a sign of deep love and affection, as well as a desire to give hope and new life to others.

“Indeed, this noble act has a very meaningful impact and can save the lives of those in need.”

As at 2022, there are over 5,000 organ donors in Sarawak. However, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian had pointed out that there is a dire need for more organ donors in Sarawak especially with the State’s population being at 2.4 million (as at 2022). – DayakDaily
