Miri Health Division compounds 38 food stall operators at Ramadan bazaars for unhygienic practices

MIRI, April 1: A total of 38 compounds have been issued during the Miri Division Health Department’s routine inspection at Ramadan bazaars around the city for various offences stipulated under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 Act.

The routine inspection was held since March 27 at five major Ramadan bazaars, namely Bazaar Miri Indoor Stadium, Bazaar New World Mart Lutong, Bazaar MyyMall Lutong, Bazaar Emart Riam and Medan Saberkas.

A total of 207 bazaar stalls and 429 bazaar food handlers underwent inspection.


Miri Health Department in a statement today reminded the general public to stay vigilant and be aware of the hygiene of the food that they planned to buy at Ramadan bazaars.

It added that such inspections would be carried out regularly throughout the Ramadan period to ensure compliance to food safety standards at bazaars throughout Miri.

“Safe, clean and hygienic food handling is very important to avoid food poisoning. Food safety assurance can only be achieved from a clean food premises and a hygienic food handler,” the department said.

“The public should exercise their consumer rights by choosing safe, clean, hygienic food premises and food handlers who practice good hygiene, wearing aprons and head covers.

The public can lodge a report if the food they bought was contaminated through the Ministry of Health’s official complaint online platform at https://moh.spab.gov.my.

All complaints will be directed to the relevant health department for investigations and inspections.

Upon completion of investigations, the findings and outcome feedback will be given to complainant.

The general public are advised to be alert for symptoms for food poisoning such as stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea.

These symptoms may occur very quickly after eating the food, or symptoms can occur 24 to 72 hours after the contaminated food has been eaten.

If such symptoms occur, the public are urged to visit a medical doctor for check-ups, and such cases will be notified by the medical doctor to the health department for subsequent investigations and follow through actions at the food premises. — DayakDaily
