KUCHING, Oct 14: Miri Country Music Fest (MCMF) 2022 will hold a golf tournament and ‘Buku Project’ event as fringe activities.

According to MCMF in a statement today, the MCMF Golf Tournament 2022 and MCMF ‘Buku Project’ was launched by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on Wednesday (Oct 13).

Speaking during the launching ceremony, Abdul Karim said MCMF has attracted festivalgoers from all walks of life including visitors from neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Brunei, Australia as well as locals from Sabah.

“The golf tournament is a great way to expand the programme and to fully maximize the location for this year’s edition,” he said.

Additionally, he said, the promotion of the event lies not only with the organisers but the whole community, restaurants, hotels, bands, local councils and more.

“The people of Miri needs to promote it because events such as these benefits everyone. When the event grows, so does everyone in the community,” he added.

Happening from Nov 25 to 26, this year’s MCMF will be held at the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club, Miri.

Meanwhile, festival founder Gracie Geikie highlighted the importance of education which can be supported through music festivals.

She said MCMF’s CSR initiative, ‘The Buku Project’, with the theme ‘One Book for Life’ will be a collaboration with Knewton Global Schools Miri, an international school here in Miri.

She explained that the collection of pre-loved books will be collected from members of the public, festival-goers and also MCMF performers, to be sorted and sent to two rural schools at Long Lama and Long Latei after the festival ends.

“We will also be curating music workshops by MCMF performers for the students of Knewton.

“Furthermore, we are teaming up with James Cook University and Curtin University to carry out event research during MCMF. It is about capacity building to ensure that future events can learn and benefit from past experiences,” she said.

Expected to attract about 2,000 festival goers, MCMF 2022 will feature performers such as Tantowi Yahya from Indonesia, Ramon Cedillo from Singapore, Cambodia Country Band from US and Cambodia, Johnny Loda Trio from Italy, UK and Thailand and more.

VIP passes and general admissions are available. Family packages and student passes are also on sale.
