KUCHING, Oct 15: The long-running anime, comics and games (ACG) convention known as Otakyun! is returning this Oct 22 and 23 at Boulevard Shopping Mall.

The convention is set to take place on the ground floor of Mall 2 from 10am to 7pm and is free for all to attend.

Since its debut in 2014, the convention has brought thousands of like-minded enthusiasts together to share and spread the love for anime, manga, video games and Japanese culture.

It is put together by a voluntary group known as Anime Gathering team, which has been organising ACG events here since 2007.

This year, the sixth edition is a scaled-down or mini version called Chibi (pronounced as chee-bee, a Japanese term for ‘small and cute’) Otakyun! 2022 but it is no less fun-filled as many activities are lined up during the two-day event.

Chibi Otakyun! 2022 is also approved as an event to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Look East Policy by The Embassy of Japan.

The major highlight would be a special guest appearance by Malaysian cosplayer Nessarose, who will be talking about ‘Career in Cosplay & Livestreaming’ as well as conducting meet-and-greet sessions with her fans.

In addition, Kendylife, a popular doodle artist and illustrator from Sabah, will also make an appearance at the event.

Two competitions will be happening, namely the Coswalk Competition on Oct 22 and Open Cosplay Competition on Oct 23.

There is also a trading card game (TCG) tournament organised by one of the event’s exclusive sponsors Buddy Connection, as well as doodle art contest and children’s colouring contest.

Contestants and panel judges (Yugana Senshi Uon, Nessarose, Angie & Jun from Hong Kong) pose for a group photo during the Otakyun! 2019 Solo Cosplay Competition.

Besides that, visitors to the convention will also stand a chance to participate in lucky draws and giveaways on stage, and also will be able to visit various booths by artists and cosplayers, exhibitions of merchandises and hobby items, and more.

Also exclusive to the event is the Chibi Otakyun! 2022 and LUMOS Projector giveaway, where one lucky winner will get the chance to win a LUMOS Ray Projector, which offers a cinematic home viewing.
