KUCHING, Nov 30: Miri City takes centre stage in showcasing Sarawak’s vibrant cultural heritage as it launches the highly-anticipated ‘Proudly Sarawak — Best of Sarawak Craft’ event held at Bintang Megamall in Miri, which runs from Nov 23 to Dec 3, 2023.

According to a press release, the event will provide visitors with an immersive experience that will highlight the best of Sarawak’s craftsmanship and traditions.

“In a visionary move, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts I (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and Miri City mayor YB Adam Yii Siew Sang unveil plans to catapult Miri as the foremost hub for the finest Sarawak craft.

“This strategic initiative not only solidifies Miri’s position in celebrating local craftsmanship, but it also sets the stage for future expansions, with aspirations reaching towards incorporating crafts from the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP EAGA) for the entire Borneo region,” read the press release.

The Proudly Sarawak event, now in its second year, began with the unveiling of the Batik Linut product by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Nov 24, 2021.

“Beyond a mere follow-up, this year’s event emerges as a dynamic chapter in the collective narrative, striking a chord with the hearts of Sarawakians.

“Envisioned not merely as an annual gathering, but as a catalyst for Miri’s evolution into the cultural hub of Sarawak, it stands as a bold step forward—a commitment to sculpting the regional narrative.

“This event is a legacy in the making, inviting all to harmonise with the spirit of Sarawak, celebrating roots, creativity, and a shared journey.”

The press release noted that this year’s edition will feature participation from 20 vendors registered with the Sarawak Craft Council (SCC), predominantly hailing from the northern region.

“These skilled artisans and craftsmen will showcase a diverse array of traditional and contemporary Sarawakian crafts, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural tapestry of the region.”

The event is organised by SCC and Batik Linut Sdn Bhd.

Batik Linut managing director Diana Rose said: “Proudly Sarawak—Best of Sarawak Craft is not just a showcase of crafts; it’s a celebration of our heritage and a testament to the skill and creativity of Sarawakian artisans.

“We, at Batik Linut, are thrilled to continue being a part of this initiative that aims to shine a spotlight on the unique cultural identity of Sarawak.

“This event is a bridge between tradition and modernity, and we extend a warm invitation to everyone to join us in this cultural festival.” — DayakDaily
