MIRI, Feb 28: Miri Airport is set to undergo significant upgrading works in the coming months, including the replacement of its ageing aerobridges and the expansion of the terminal building.

The Minister for Transport Sarawak, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, confirmed the plans during a press conference in Miri after chairing a meeting with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) at the airport today.

A key component of the upgrade involves replacing the airport’s ageing aerobridges, which have been prone to frequent breakdowns, causing inconvenience for airlines and passengers.

“The third bay aerobridge will be replaced in March this year,” Lee announced.

“Following that, two more aerobridges will be replaced this year, addressing ongoing issues that have resulted in frequent disruptions,” he added.

Each aerobridge is estimated to cost approximately RM2 million. Once completed, the improvements will enhance operational efficiency and reduce maintenance concerns that have long plagued the airport.

In addition to the aerobridge replacement, the government is also pressing ahead with plans to expand the Miri Airport terminal.

A preliminary meeting involving the Miri Transport Administration, MAHB, and the Public Works Department (JKR) was held earlier this week to discuss the project’s details.

“The next step involves appointing consultants to develop the design,” Lee explained.

“A team will also be conducting a study to assess the airport’s requirements and ensure a well-planned expansion.”

One of the key areas of focus is improving traffic flow within the terminal area, which has long been a source of congestion. The proposed extension aims to streamline passenger movement, increase parking facilities, and introduce dedicated bays for tourist buses, taxis, and e-hailing services.

The planned expansion will significantly increase the airport’s capacity, boosting its annual passenger handling ability from the current two million to four million passengers. The terminal’s total floor area will be expanded from 16,900 square metres to 25,000 square metres.

A major highlight of the upgrade is the addition of six new aerobridges, bringing the total to nine once the works are completed.

The new infrastructure will enhance passenger convenience, particularly for international travellers, with a dedicated international departure lounge included in the plans.

Additionally, there will be a separate area for rural air services to better accommodate passengers traveling to and from remote areas.

“The airport upgrade is part of broader efforts to enhance Sarawak’s aviation infrastructure, ensuring that Miri Airport can meet the growing demands of both domestic and international travellers,” Lee said.

He further stated that with the replacement of ageing aerobridges already scheduled and terminal expansion plans advancing, these developments mark a significant step forward in improving the airport’s efficiency, capacity, and passenger experience. – DayakDaily
