KUCHING, June 12: ‘Piu Piu’— a new synthetic drug—has not been detected in Sarawak so far, says Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

In a TVS report, she said that authorities are taking the threat posed by drug-laced vape products seriously and are continuously monitoring developments related to the issue.

She noted that while the use of vape products is not necessarily illegal, if the vape liquid contains drugs or prohibited controlled substances, it constitutes an offence under the law and poses serious health risks.

“The Sarawak education department, which is a member of the One-Stop Committee on Addressing Drug and Substance Issues (OSC MIDS), has been actively carrying out various prevention and advocacy programmes to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and vape abuse.

“To date, educational and awareness activities have been conducted in 1,495 schools throughout Sarawak, involving 230 secondary schools and 1,265 primary schools,” she said during a press conference after attending a meeting of the OSC MIDS here today.

Fatimah added that the Sarawak education department is also collaborating with the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) Sarawak to strengthen awareness among students and youths about the risks associated with drug and vape abuse.

In addition, various brochures and educational materials have been distributed throughout the state to improve public understanding of the dangers of using prohibited substances.
