Minister: Over half of telecom towers in Sarawak still ‘naked’, govt to review matter

KUCHING, May 19: More than half of the telecommunication towers in Sarawak are still ‘naked’, says Communication and Digital Minister Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil.

While he did not give a number, Ahmad Fahmi said some towers are installed in areas with 4G coverage as an additional service, while others do not have 4G connectivity.

“So we are currently reviewing this matter to solve the issues as soon as possible by instructing the mobile network operator or telecommunication company to expedite the process,” he told reporters after visiting the Media Room at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building today.

These towers have been dubbed ‘naked’ as they do not have the required electronic equipment.

Fahmi added he was made to understand that about 600 telecommunication towers will be installed in Sarawak.

On May 4, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Teo Nie Ching disclosed 636 telecommunication towers would be built in Sarawak under Phase 1 of the National Digital Interconnection Program (Jendela) between March 2022 to Sept 2023. — DayakDaily
