KUCHING, April 29: Residents in Bintulu are being reassured by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) that there is no cause for alarm if they hear a warning siren tomorrow (April 30).

According to a siren testing information notice posted today on MetMalaysia’s Facebook page, the siren is part of a scheduled test of the Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM) at the Bintulu Marine Police Headquarters, which will take place tomorrow between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

“Residents in the surrounding area are advised not to panic at the sound of the siren because it is only a test.

“MetMalaysia will notify if there are any amendments,” read the statement.

For the record, MetMalaysia developed SAATNM in 2005 with the primary purpose of issuing an effective and immediate early tsunami warning.

The warning is issued in the event of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea, South China Sea, Sulu Sea, Sulawesi Sea, and the Pacific Ocean that could potentially affect the country. — DayakDaily
