Mega Suai Cluster adds 160 cases to Miri’s Covid-19 case count today

MIRI, Aug 5: The number of Covid-19 cases continues to climb in Miri, with 177 new infections recorded today.

The bulk of this is from the Mega Suai Cluster in Niah which accounted for 160 new cases, disclosed Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) in a statement today.

As for the others, MDDMC added, seven Covid-19 cases were recorded in Miri, while 10 cases were reported in Beluru District.

The Mega Suai Cluster is centred on workers and their family members at an oil palm plantation which has since been placed under an Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) since July 31 this year.

As of today, a total of 362 individuals have been screened, involving plantation workers and their family members residing in the plantation area.

MDDMC said, of the 362 people, 201 were found positive for Covid-19, including the index case, while 142 had tested negative.

Meanwhile, the remaining 19 people are still awaiting screening test results.

MDDMC disclosed that of the 201 people found positive for Covid-19, 19 are Malaysians and 182 are non-Malaysians consisting of foreign workers with working permits and those without permits.

All Covid-19 positive cases have been admitted to Miri Hospital and the Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) in Miri. — DayakDaily
