KUCHING, Oct 22: Kuching’s World Crafts Council (WCC) City for Crafts status could help elevate local artists and designers to international level.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said he see the potential through connectivity and cooperation with other cities such as Jogjakarta in Indonesia, Linshu in China and Taraz in Kazahkstan which expressed interest to have WCC sister crafts city status alongside Kuching.

“Because Kuching already has the privileges with the status. I think we should be working together (on this) with the government including the private sector to ride on this title.

“We should explore more of its potential by putting ourselves in the international standard (sic) through exporting (crafts and arts) and make known our local talents and designers rather than only having local exhibitions here,” he told reporters when met at the What About Kuching (WAK) 2023 Festival ‘Artistically About Kuching’ special exhibition viewing held at tHe Spring shopping mall today.

He said Kuching was conferred the title back in 2019 before the pandemic, and Kuching City, has many crafts and arts to showcase, but there has not been much promotions.

As such, he opined, MBKS as the city council will be able to assist and explore the possibility of working together with other cities through cooperation with other cities to get local crafts and arts into global showcases.

“We should have connection with all those cities who are also rich in their crafts, so that we will be able to step out from Sarawak. This has our attention,” he added. — DayakDaily
