KUCHING, May 24: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has urged certain animal-loving organisation and individuals to “do the right thing” after MBKS enforcement officers were blocked from addressing a stray dog issue in a residential area within the city’s jurisdiction.
During his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live session today, Wee shared that the council had responded to a public complaint about a group of stray dogs roaming an undisclosed residential area.
However, upon arrival, the enforcement team was forced to retreat when a group of individuals intervened, preventing them from carrying out their duties.
“We have reminded time and again that pet dogs should be confined within the compound of the house. They should not be allowed to roam freely.
“If you are from an organisation, you should comply with the law. Pet animals should not be allowed to roam the streets. If you intend to keep these animals, find a proper place for them—do not let them wander in the streets as it makes residents feel unsafe,” he said.
Wee expressed frustration, asking, “What should I do? If I don’t take action, the public complains that their lives are at risk. If I do take action, a group tries to protect the animals. I have no objection to protecting these animals, but they should be properly confined within a house or designated area.”
He continued, stressing the importance of responsible pet ownership. “We are not inhumane in tackling the rabies issue. We’ve implemented various measures, including vaccination. But until today, there are still rabies cases reported. This issue is still affecting Sarawak,” he said, urging greater collaboration between the public, animal organisations, and relevant authorities.
“I understand your love for animals—we all share that love. But human lives are precious too,” he added.
Meanwhile, two new rabies-positive cases were reported this week in the Padawan area, one at SJK Chung Hua in Batu Kawa and the other near a retail shop in Mile 10. Both cases involved bites from stray dogs.
Wee reminded the public to remain vigilant, particularly as the festive season approaches.
“We have to stay alert, especially during the holidays. When going out, keep an eye on your surroundings,” Wee advised, underscoring that the safety and well-being of the public must remain a top priority. — DayakDaily
