KUCHING, Sept 24: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has facilitated the immediate repair and replacement of a storm-damaged roof and gutter at SK Kenyalang after strong winds caused several roofing sheets to be blown off, resulting in serious water leakage and creating a safety risk for pupils and teachers.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillor Albert Tay and MBKS officers, visited the school to assess the damage and coordinate the necessary repair works today.
Wee noted that the damaged roofing had caused water to leak into a classroom, while the dislodged roofing sheets also posed a potential danger to those in the vicinity.
“Fortunately, no pupils were underneath the affected area when the sheets fell,” he said in a statement.
Following the site inspection, arrangements were made for the damaged roofing and gutter to be repaired and replaced.
The repair work is being supported by AMCAN Sdn Bhd, while Wan Li Wan Welding Works is carrying out the repairs as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
“I thank AMCAN Sdn Bhd and Wan Li Wan Welding Works for responding quickly and supporting the school. The safety of our children cannot wait.
“Once we were informed of the situation, we came to the school to assess the damage and coordinate the necessary action,” Wee said.
He said the assistance was part of the MBKS Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Plan of Action, which includes creating safer public spaces and school environments for children.
Under the plan, one of the identified actions is to improve safety infrastructure in schools, including roads, drainage, street lighting and other facilities that could affect children’s safety.
Wee stressed that the CFCI programme was not limited to organising activities for children but also involved taking practical measures to ensure they could learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment.
“The CFCI programme is not limited to organising activities for children. It also requires practical action to ensure that children can learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment,” he said.
As a UNICEF CFCI Candidate City, MBKS remains committed to working with schools, government agencies, elected representatives, the private sector and the community to address issues affecting children.
