KUCHING, Nov 4: Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) is working on upgrading the street lighting within its jurisdiction with energy-saving light emitting diodes (LED), including installing decorative features in designated areas to enrich the urban landscape with a vibrant glow.

Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said that the council has successfully secured funding approval for the project, in which the tender process for the implementation will be initiated in due time.

“At present, our primary objective is the enhancement of all street lighting systems using LEDs. Subsequently, we will explore the possibility of integrating LED lights into traffic light poles,” he said in responding to a suggestion from netizen during his ShallWeeTalk online session while in China today.

Wee noted that there are a few fully LED-illuminated traffic light poles in Sarawak, including at the traffic light turning into Batu Kawa Old Bazaar, but such features have yet to be deployed within MBKS’ area.

Apart from the LED street lighting upgrading, he emphasised that the council would be introducing decorative lightings featuring designs such as MBKS’ official flower, hornbill and cat.

“Hopefully we can call for tender for the projects soon, which will include the installation of decorative lightings in assigned areas to make it look vibrant and livelier,” he added.

Moreover, MBKS has proposed landscaping works to enhance the aesthetics of the Padungan area.

“We aim to finalise this plan next week and put them up for public feedback.

“This is to encourage public participation so that they can contribute to making our city more beautiful and livable,” he said. — DayakDaily
