KUCHING, July 19: It is still in the best interest of Sarawakians to rely on their own political leaders rather than the ones in Peninsular Malaysia, as only Sarawak-based political parties can promote and safeguard the State’s legitimate interests.

Political pundit Dato Peter Minos said this in support of Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who urged Sarawakians to continue supporting local political parties and warned against allowing Peninsula-based parties to become dominant in Sarawak.

“He (Abdul Karim) is absolutely right in saying that Sarawakians cannot rely on Peninsula’s political leaders or parties. Let me admit it plainly: Peninsular Malaysian leaders are too engrossed with their own problems that they have no time for us Sarawakians,” he said.

He went on to say that Peninsular Malaysians have their own political culture which differs from that of Sarawak, claiming that they used tactics such as harsh language and a ‘do anything to win’ mentality.

He also claimed that the political scene in Peninsular Malaysia tends to bring up race and religion, describing it as an ‘inherent part of Peninsular politics’ and not part of Sarawak’s political culture.

“Maybe the East cannot meet the West, given that they are separated by sea, distance, and so many things. We Sarawakians cannot hope or think that Peninsular Malaysian politicians know our hopes, aspirations, concerns, and fears.

“It is still best for us in Sarawak to rely on our political leaders for our progress, advancement, ideas, inspirations, and much more,” he said. — DayakDaily
